A drill press (also known as a pedestal drill or bench drill) is a boring machine primarily used for making round holes or driving fasteners. It is fitted with a bit which is secured by a chuck. The distance from the center of the chuck to the closest edge of the column is the throat. The swing is simply twice the throat distance. Thus, a tool with 4″ throat has an 8″ swing (it can drill a hole in the center of an 8″ work piece), and is called an 8″ drill press.
