Rhino Sawmills was born from the owner’s need to have a band saw capable to cut logs for the bee hives he was building. As he was unable to find a band saw capable of cutting the desired sizes at an affordable price he decided to build his own. The saw was quickly noticed by passers-by who needed to have their own Rhino sawmills. And voilà! A new business was born in Africa with the Rhino 700 Band Sawmill.
Since these humble beginnings in 2008 the business has grown significantly and the owner opened a factory.
The band sawmills that are developed by Rhino Sawmills are a good example of localisation through initial reverse engineering and further product development and optimisation. Previously South African sawyers had to buy imported sawmills. However, Rhino Band Sawmills developed band sawmills in Africa for the African industry.
Manufactured with only the best materials and components available, the Rhino Sawmills out performs it’s imported counterparts. Making use of thicker steel, double chain drives, more hard wearing guides, and trusted petrol and diesel engines, Rhino insures that you will have many years of excellent service. Models also available in 3 phase electric.
“We do not compromise on the quality of our sawmills. If you can built something that last why don’t you! We take pride in having a winning team that live up to our brand promise”
The Rhino Sawmill range includes the Rhino 500b, Rhino 700, Rhino 1000 and also the Rhino Slabber which can slab a log of up to 1,5 meters wide.
Rhino Sawmills comes in many configurations, stationary, single or double axle mobile units, petrol, diesel, electric, and extendable log decks for longer logs.
Models
RHINO 500
The Rhino 500 band sawmill offers sawyers an economical and durable solution to meet their DIY/HOBBYIST milling needs. From the powder-coated structure, to the reliable Kohler gas engine, this mill will exceed your expectations. All major steel components feature a powder coated , galvanized and stainless steel finish ensuring your mill will stand up to nature’s elements. We recommend covering your sawmill when not in use, but if you forget it’s good to know that it will endure nature. The head moves up and down along galvanized steel channel via a very easy to turn hand crank system. The blade is kept lubricated by utilizing a water gravity feed system. This prevents sap from gumming up your blade.
Cutting
The mill is capable of cutting 700mm diameter logs up to 3.2m long. Additional log deck sections are available in 2m lengths. Capable of squaring cants at 500mm or skimming veneers at as thin as 1.5mm. The Rhino 500 will cut within 25mm of the deck ensuring you maximize your usable board foot output.
Power
The Rhino 500 are powered by 14HP Kohler gas engine. It comes with a two year commercial engine warranty for all applications. Attached to the engine is an industrial centrifugal clutch system which offers “gas and go” efficiency and ease.
Track System
The head of our machine rolls along rigid “L” channel which is bolted to the log deck sides and cross supported with heavy duty laser cut and precision bended cross bunks. These cross bunks supports ensure the weight of the log is dispersed over a large bearing surface to avoid marking the log with indentation. They also provide additional rigidity to the track system. The log deck itself consists of two 2m sections allowing for 3.2m log lengths. Additional 2m log decks may be attached to accommodate logs of any length.
Blades
The Rhino 500 utilizes 32/35mm x3658mm x 22mm dabble harden blades which are available through Rhino Band Sawmills. Blade kerf is kept to a minimum at just 2mm to maximise the most amount of lumber per log.
Rhino 500 Loading Ramp Kit
The heavy duty steel log loading ramp kit easily mounts to the sawmill allowing users to easily roll logs weighing up to 1,500 kgs onto the sawmill bed. The kit includes two steel ramps, a manual hand crank winch and a mounting kit. Please note that this loading ramp kit are not compatible with the Rhino 700 and Rhino 1000 sawmill.
